The aim of AIFMD is to ensure greater transparency within the European fund market and to protect investors from investment risks. The directive hinges on the EU passport, which alternative fund managers (AIFMs) must acquire for themselves and their alternative investment funds (AIFs) in order to operate within the EU market. AIFMs must regularly report on the liquidity, risk profiles, and concentrations of their portfolios.
The directive came into effect for EU fund managers and their funds in July 2013. Starting October 2015, fund managers based outside the EU will have to acquire a license to distribute AIFs in the EU.
In order to apply for the EU passport, you are required to submit data on issuers and alternative funds. SIX provides this information through its AIFMD data service. This service also helps you calculate the correct asset and risk values for your reports to the local supervisory authority. Furthermore, it lists the fund managers and funds licensed to operate within the EU. Investment consultants and financial advisors are able to provide competent advice to their clients and fulfill their legal obligation to protect investors.
SIX obtains the data for its AIFMD service from the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), as well as the local supervisory authorities of the EU member states.
